Adaptation of any hexagon pattern is easier then you think! No other quilt tool even comes close to being this easy. Sure you can make the same cuts with any 60 degree angled ruler, but how many times do you have to move the ruler or walk around your cutting space? Keep the same 2 simple cutting strokes time after time. Less effort equals less fatigue!
For Step-by-Step instructions, please go to Section A if you already have a pattern OR Section B if you know a measurement, but don’t have a pattern.
The Mercury Template is completely Customizable!
Section A. I have my own pattern/template.
1. Photocopy your hexagon from the pattern. Make sure the copier is set to 100% - do not enlarge or shrink (unless you want to change the final size of your quilt)! Cut out your hexagon exactly.
2. Use the paper copy against the long edge of your Mercury Template to determine the necessary fabric strip width.

3. TURN OVER THE MERCURY TEMPLATE and center the photocopy ON THE BACK, up against the cutting channels. The point of any size Hexagon (up to 8”) will fit exactly. (The bottom of the template is the side with the engraved lines.) This side down will minimize the parallax from the thickness of the template. It will also give your fabric something to ‘bump up against’ and give you a snug fit to assure ACCURATE placement.

4. Take Quilter’s Tape and make yourself some guidelines.

5. You are now ready to CUT QUILTS FAST!!!
Section B. I don’t have a template, but I know the Flat side to Flat side measurement.
1. If you haven’t already taken into account the seam allowance, add ½” to the finished piece size. (Example 3” finished becomes 3 ½”)
2. Cut an appropriate width fabric strip.

3. Center the Mercury Template over the end of the strip, for your first cut.

4. Make the cut; remove the “extra triangle” pieces.

5. Now fold your fabric as shown below. Place a piece of quilter’s tape to hold it in place.

6. Align the Mercury Template along the cut edge, as shown below.

7. Make 2 cuts; one through each channel of the X.

8. Remove Mercury Template and tape.
9. Here is your Hexagon, with perfectly equal sides and NO FABRIC MARKING!
10. Measure Flat side to Flat side from three adjoining sides to double-check your accuracy.
11. Use this piece of fabric as your “original” template and add some guidelines with Quilter’s Tape as explained in Section A.
